Arman Manaryan

Director

Arman Manaryan was an Iranian-born Soviet Armenian director and the brother of actor Yervand Manaryan. He moved to his family’s homeland following the Second World War, graduated first from the Yerevan Conservatory and later from Moscow’s VGIK film school. His most celebrated films include his 1962 diploma short Tjvjik (“fried liver”), held up as an early example of post-Stalinist Armenian national identity on film; Karine (1969), a charming musical-operetta; and The Spring Heghnar, a period romance adapted from the novella by beloved author Mkrtich Armen. Manaryan died in 2016 at the age of 86.
