František Vláčil (1924-1999) was a Czech director, painter, and graphic artist, voted the greatest filmmaker in his nation’s history in a 1998 poll. His films produced at the Barrandov Studio in the 1960s demonstrate his remarkable visual ingenuity and talent with actors. Marketa Lazarová (1967), his three-hour historical epic, was voted the greatest Czech film of all time.
