Grigori Aleksandrov (1903-1983) was a Soviet filmmaker who collaborated with Sergei Eisenstein on Strike (1925), Battleship Potemkin (1925), and October (1928), before going on to be one of the pioneers of the Soviet musical in the 1930s. Aleksandrov was married for over four decades to Soviet film star Lyubov Orlova, who starred in many of his musicals, including Jolly Fellows (1934) and his classic Circus (1936) as an American woman who comes to Russia with her black child following being a victim of racism in the USA.
