A film synonymous with perestroika, Assa is a cult classic which helped to bring Russian rock into the mainstream. It features cameos from iconic artists such as Viktor Tsoi and Yuri Kasparyan, with a soundtrack by Boris Grebenshchikov. Set in wintry Odessa, the film follows several plotlines, among them that of a young musician who falls for a mobster’s mistress, and a parallel story involving an 18th-century assassination plot. The film’s chaotic and experimental energy is a great representation of the times.
