In the wake of the Second World War, the borderland between Italy and newly-formed Yugoslavia is a zone of loss, memory, and displacement. In this picturesque but melancholy world, a miserly and widowed carpenter Mario (Massimo De Francovich) and a lonely chestnut seller Marta (Ivana Roščić) form a tentative bond. Drawing on local folklore, debut director Gregor Božič captures the poetic impermanence of lost souls caught between East and West, the past and the future.
