Alina Gorlova’s poetic and harrowing documentary follows Andriy Suleyman, a Ukrainian-Kurdish relief worker whose life has been marked by war. After his family is scattered across Europe following their escape from the Syrian civil war, Andriy finds himself on another set of front lines in the Donbas. Employing stunning black-and-white cinematography and an immersive score, Gorlova cuts between Andriy’s humanitarian work in Ukraine and his visits to family members in Germany and Iraq, sketching out a collective portrait of family and nation undone by the cyclical violence of war.
