A graduate of the Kazakh National Academy of Arts, her feature debut Mariam (2019) garnered critical acclaim on the international festival circuit, appearing at Locarno and Toronto, alongside receiving a nomination for Best Debut at the Asian Film Academy Awards. We’ll be sitting down with the director to discuss the film, a haunting drama based on real events in the life of Meruert Sabbusinova, who stars in the title role as a semi-fictionalised version of herself.
