One of post-independence Tajikistan’s most vital directors returns to his roots in this stirring parable of redemption and reconciliation. Career criminal Hamro (Maruf Pulodzoda) arrives in his home village after ten years in Russia to settle the affairs of his dying mother – only to be confronted by locals demanding that he pay his long overdue debts, and by a nine-year-old son he has never met now desperate for paternal affection. Filmed in Usmonov’s own hometown of Asht, with a cast drawn from his family and other locals, Angel on the Right combines dark comedy, slice of life naturalism, and traditional spirituality in its portrait of a man coming to terms with his place in the world.
