Sergei Loznitsa is a Ukrainian director known for his documentaries as well as feature directorial works. In 1987, he graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute as a mathematician, then worked in the Institute of Cybernetics. In 1991, he studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography. His first two fiction features, My Joy (2010) and In the Fog (2012) both competed for the Palme d’Or. Maidan (2014), his documentary record of the 2013–14 protests in Kyiv and their violent suppression, is recognised as a vital document of the events.
