Vasily Shukshin, one of Russian cinema’s most notable figures, was born in 1929 in a small Siberian village. His directorial debut, There Is Such a Lad (1964) was met with standing ovations and international awards. Shukshin’s films are humorous and melancholic, exploring the struggle between his working class rural background and the city-dwelling intelligentsia who dominated filmmaking at the time.
