Kote Mikaberidze

Kote Mikaberizde (1896-1973) was a Soviet Georgian actor and film director. He started as an actor in the famed Kutaisi and Batumi theatres before moving to Tbilisi Drama Studio. He was greatly inspired by Dziga Vertov, whose influence is clear in the dizzyingly avant-garde My Grandmother (1929). He directed seven films, including the equally well-known Hasani (1932). His films were incisive and unflinching, and he was imprisoned for anti-Soviet statements. After prison, he tragically stopped directing.
