Aleksei German (1938-2013) had a distinctive directorial voice, which he fashioned into a subversive commentary on Russia’s history. An artist who never preached, his challenging works explored moral relativism and ambiguity with humour and intrigue. His best known works are Trial on the Road (1971) and Khrustalyov, My Car! (1998), which both explored controversial moments in Soviet history. Although he only completed seven films in his career, he is widely recognised as one of Russia’s most influential auteurs
