Corneliu Porumboiu

Director

One of the leading figures in Romania’s cinematic New Wave for nearly two decades, Corneliu Porumboiu helped to launch the movement on the international stage when his debut feature, 12:08 East of Bucharest, won the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 2005. He has since demonstrated an aptitude for playful genre work that distinguishes him from his New Wave contemporaries. His sophomore feature, Police, Adjective (2009), won the Jury Award in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand. Work since has included the crime drama The Whistlers (2019), and two documentaries on football, The Second Game (2014) and Infinite Football (2018), which premiered in Berlin.
