Cristi Puiu

Director

Cristi Puiu is a writer, director, actor, and producer, and one of the founding fathers of the Romanian New Wave. Several of his early films have been credited with kickstarting the movement: his low-budget road movie debut, Stuff and Dough (2001); the 2004 short Cigarettes and Coffee, which won the Golden Bear for best short in Berlin; and his sophomore feature film, The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu, which won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and established Puiu’s mordant sense of humour and skill for social critique.
