Eliza Petkova is a Bulgarian writer and director. Born in Veliko Tarnovo in 1983, she studied philosophy and Japanese culture at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf before working as an independent filmmaker in Berlin, focusing mainly on documentary. She has also been a student of the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB). Her short film Absent was nominated for a Cinéfondation Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. After several further shorts, she released her feature debut Zhaleika in 2016, which won a Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival that year.
