Georgiy Daneliya was born in 1930 in Tbilisi, Georgia. One of the most beloved Soviet directors and screenwriters, Daneliya worked for Mosfilm to create sophisticated comedies like Gentlemen of Luck (1972), Afony (1975), Mimino (1977) and later Autumn Marathon (1979). He perfected the genre of what might be called lyrical or sad comedy. His work always represented the lives of ordinary people against the backdrop of stagnant Soviet reality. Daneliya’s innovative film Kin-Dza-Dza! (1986) stands out as a genre of its own: a metaphorical science fiction film combining new language and ancient wisdom.
