István Szőts (1912-1998) was a Hungarian director born in Transylvania. Although his career was curtailed first by fascist and then by communist censorship, Szőts’ two surviving features, both about the bond between poor Hungarians and their land, have proven hugely influential within his homeland: People of the Mountains (1942) won first prize at the Venice Film Festival, and was followed in 1948 by Song of the Cornfields.
