Kira Muratova (1934-2018) was a rare talent. Few directors have been as gifted, or have left behind such unique contributions to the film medium. The enormity of her talent was proportional only to her struggles as an artist. For many years Muratova’s films were shelved and her opportunities to direct limited. Her films are chaotic and unique narratives that play with form, sound and plot; which jump off the screen and remain with you long after viewing.
‘Harmony doesn’t mean balance. You must destroy something symmetrically, break the rules. It’s only then that things grab you.’ – Kira Muratova
