Born in 1969 in Rostov-on-Don, Kirill Serebrennikov studied physics before directing stage productions in the mid-1990s. In addition to his continued successful stage work, Serebrennikov has directed many acclaimed films, and worked both at the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre School and the Gogol Centre. From 2017 until he left the country in 2022, Serebrennikov, a vocal critic of the Russian government, was involved and convicted in a politically motivated criminal case involving embezzlement. His films since leaving Russia include Petrov’s Flu and Tchaikovsky’s Wife.
