Maya Vitkova is a Bulgarian writer and director. She studied film at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia. After working as an assistant director for several years, she founded her Viktoria Films production company and produced Kamen Kalev’s Cannes-premiered film Eastern Plays in 2009. Her own directorial career includes the documentary Mothers and Daughters (2006) and the short films Stanka Goes Home (2010) and My Tired Father (2011), both written by celebrated Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude. Viktoria (2014) was her feature fiction debut. The film was the first Bulgarian feature to screen in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
