Vasili Pichul (1961 – 2015) shot to fame with his first and most controversial film, Little Vera. It was co-written with his wife Mariya Khemlik and shot in his hometown Zhdanov, and challenged the boundaries of nudity and eroticism in Soviet film. A box office success, it was the second highest grossing Soviet film at the time. His second film, How Dark the Nights are on the Black Sea, was screened as part of Un Certain Regard section at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival.
