Yakov Protazanov was a Russian filmmaker. Born in 1881 in Moscow, as a young man Protazanov spent two years visiting Europe before returning to Russia and joining the film industry in 1906. Active until 1943, two years before his death, Protazanov directed over a hundred films during his career, including a celebrated 1916 adaptation of Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades and Aelita, a 1924 adaptation of an Alexei Tolstoy story that is one of the greats of early science-fiction filmmaking.
