Born in 1941 in Penza Oblast and raised in Moscow, Russian animator Yuri Norstein is best known for his mesmerising shorts. The most loved and famous of these is Hedgehog in the Fog (1976), considered a classic in Russia and a favourite of adults and children around the world. His other renowned masterpiece Tale of Tales (1979) is often described as one of the greatest animations ever made, and was cited by co-founder of Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki as one of his all-time favourite works.
