Shot through with compassion and filmmaking brio, Home Games is a portrait of a young woman confronting the chasm between dreams and reality. 20-year-old Alina is a talented footballer from the suburbs of Kyiv, on the verge of a call-up to the Ukrainian national team. When her mother dies, and she is left to care for her younger brother and sister, her sporting aspirations run up against the harsh realities of familial duty. Alisa Kovalenko’s engagingly direct documentary is a triumph of empathetic, low-budget filmmaking.
Up close and personal, this portrait of a teenager forced to fend for herself and her siblings packs a powerful punch. And the Cinderella puppet sequence is a reminder of the preciousness of every child's capacity for joy. I loved it.
