In a typical Soviet school, former soldier Ilya, played by the iconic Vyacheslav Tikhonov, attempts to find joy in his work as a teacher while avoiding the affections of a former pupil turned colleague. The tragedy of World War Two hangs heavy around them yet goes unnoticed by their students. Is it possible to lead a drastically different generation by example?
