The history of cinematography in Belarus dates back to 1924 when Belarusfilm, a Soviet film studio, was founded. However, even in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the Soviet rule, Belarus had a booming cinema industry with privately owned cinemas built all around the country.
Most of the output from Belarusfilm was in Russian rather than Belarusian and very ideologically heavy. Belarusfilm also specialized in documentary filmmaking.
Despite the heavy censorship and lack of funding of the past 20 years, Belarus is currently seeing a rise of a new generation of independent filmmakers. Among them, Darya Zhuk and Vlada Senkova.
