Igor Maslennikov was born in Nizhny Novgorod before moving to Leningrad (present day St Petersburg), working first as a journalist and then screenwriter, editor, and cameraman. He trained as a film director under Grigori Kozintsev. He became endeared to audiences thanks to the outstanding success of the Sherlock Holmes film series. He met with further success when he directed the film Winter Cherry, a melodrama about a strong and misunderstood career woman in St Petersburg and one of the most popular Russian-language files of the 1980s.
