Vladimir Tarasov explores the theme of universal communication when a painter experiences first contact with a shapeshifting alien. Tackling the question of how communication between two sentient species might actually occur, Tarasov’s answer is music. The painter and the alien end up humming together and walking off as friends. Incidentally, Contact was the first time Soviet viewers encountered Nino Rota’s melody, which then became famous in The Godfather.

Alien Yellow Submarine
This is strange but colourful and effective, featuring a John Lennon lookalike and an alien...what's not to like?

Contact
Delightfully trippy little film! John Muir / John Lennon, an extra-terrestrial, Gershwin and the Godfather... all rather bizarre, but loveable.
